  • Since before I can remember, I have been fascinated with cattle. I was always following my Dad around the farm, especially when there was cattle work to be done. I was not always helpful but I was there. I was with my father when he purchased the first two Charbray bulls from McGinnis Bros. of Lathrop, Missouri in 1956. I also went along to the Litton Ranch in 1958 when Dad bought a purebred Charolais bull and a 15/16 Charolais bull. My first female was a 7/8 cow purchased from Litton’s. I did the normal 4-H baby beef projects as well having a cow herd as part of my FFA program. At Kansas State I majored in animal science and worked for a time at the beef barn.
  • After college, one of my first jobs was with Aristo Farms of Mayetta, Ks. a Charolais breeding herd. I came back to the family farm in 1975 and worked at farming and raising Charolais cattle. In 1987 my brother Bruce came back to the farm and Dad retired to urban Scandia, Ks. From 1987 until 2003 Bruce and I managed the farm and expanded the breeding herd and also added a back grounding program as part of the operation. We started having annual bull sales, first by private treaty and later started selling spring yearlings by auction.
  • In the fall of 2003 the family herd was dispersed and in the spring of 2004 we quit the farming operation. I purchased a few cows and several open heifers from the dispersal to continue the Runft Charolais tradition. Later, I purchased cows from other sources. The herd now contains about 50 breeding females which is the size I plan to maintain.

The spring 2005 bull sale was my first outside the Runft Ranch name. I am pleased that our associates chose to continue to sell with me. Their consignments are a definite asset to the breed and to the annual sale. This March 27, we will again offer a nice selection of bulls to commercial and registered breeders. This group will have a larger number of excellent bulls than the 2005 sale. The plan is to improve the offering each year. Summer and fall bulls as well as females will be offered private treaty at any time.

I am always willing to discuss the sale of Charolais cattle and can be contacted:
